12/28/2009: Black Rock receives more national recognition!

We just got the great word from the American Sailing Association that Black Rock Sailing School has won national recognition for the second year in a row (since we opened our doors) as ASA Outstanding School - 2009 AND our head instructor, Brenton Lochridge, has been awarded ASA Outstanding Instructor - 2009!

ASA's independent surveys and scoring system has recognized the quality of our instruction, training fleet, and curriculum. No other school in New England can say the same! Last year, we had a whopping 3.96 out of 4.00. In 2009, we scored a 3.97 out of 4.00 (a double whopper!). We haven't achieved perfection yet, but are certainly trying!

3/28/2009: Black Rock BVI trips a huge success!

Black Rock Sailing School successfully completed three charter trips to the British Virgin Islands in partnership with SailTime Boston. Each trip offered optional ASA 104 Bareboat Charter instruction, along with a fantastic week vacation, all lead by Black Rock instructor and former BVI resident Brenton Lochridge. The trip was conducted on a Beneteau 505 from Sail Caribbean, offering a fantastic platform for instruction, adventure, and exploration.

For a small taste of the excitement experienced in the BVI, check out this report filed from the scene:

In 2010, Black Rock will offer instruction and vacation packages including both afloat and ashore options. Contact Brenton for more details.

1/30/2009: Boston Harbor - An Excellent Learning Environment.

Boston Harbor is a truly exciting place to sail and instruct, and the Boston Harbor Islands a truly beautiful place to sail and explore.

The harbor provides action, diversity, and history; all within it's protected waters, and there is easy access to true ocean conditions (whether it be flat seas, chop, or exhilarating swells) just outside the harbor entrance. You can be surrounded by an amazing city skyline one minute, and then be "transported" to a faraway paradise while sailing in a maze of natural islands just a short sail away.

The challenges unique to this area make our students better sailors and prepare them to sail in "easier" locals around the world.  Only a few other locations in the U.S. offer these types of challenges and diversity.  You will physically see and do everything in the curriculum.

On any given day, you may encounter some fog or a squall. Shifty breezes may exist near the downtown area, and steadier breezes tend to exist everywhere else. You may encounter a harbor seal or two, and our more advanced courses may encounter a whale or two as they venture off to more distant ports. You may sail past the gorgeous tall ships and schooners from the past or the incredibly fast Artemis Transat & Volvo ocean racers of the present.

On any given day, you will encounter pretty strong currents, practically every right of way situation possible in the busy working harbor, a large ship or a tug & barge, and calm waters within the harbor and bordering waters. You will encounter practically every type of navigation aid to make chart reading that much easier to understand, while learning how to avoid shoals, rocks, and sandbars along the way. You will also have the opportunity to watch a jumbo jet glide a few hundred feet above as we sail alongside Logan Airport (I really like this!).

All of this and more while sailing our new boats loaded with the latest safety equipment and technology, and an experienced instructor by your side offering feedback and advice when you need it.

Come sailing with us and discover how diverse and how beautiful Boston Harbor truly is! For most, this is a life changing experience.
